Debates are powerful educational tools, encouraging students to think critically, articulate their ideas, and engage with opposing perspectives. At SMK Jalan Bukit in Kajang, Selangor, a recent debate as part of the Speechmakers Program tackled a relevant question: “Should mobile phones be used in schools?” Organized by Solve Education! Foundation and supported by Saujana Cares Foundation, this lively exchange showcased the students’ ability to reason, communicate effectively, and empathize with different viewpoints.

Why Debates Are Important in Education

Debates offer more than just a platform for discussion; they cultivate essential skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork. Students engage in research, form arguments, and counter opposing points—abilities invaluable for their academic and personal growth. This interactive learning approach empowers students to express themselves confidently while respecting differing opinions. Debates also train students to handle differing perspectives gracefully.

Research supports these benefits. A study by the National Speech and Debate Association found that students who participate in speech and debate activities experience higher self-esteem, improved analytical skills, and increased interest in their classes. Additionally, participation in debate has been linked to higher standardized test scores and greater academic achievement. Learn more about the benefits of debates in education from this source.

What the Students Had to Say

The debate featured two teams: the affirmative team, which argued in favor of allowing mobile phones in schools, and the opposing team, which opposed the idea. Engaging in the debate allowed students to understand the complexities of the issue.

One student from the opposing team, Alia, made a strong case against mobile phones in schools. She raised concerns about managing screen time, particularly for students who already spend significant time on devices at home:

As the affirmative team says, parents should control their child’s screen time at home. But what if every child comes from a different family background? What if their family works until midnight? Their parents can’t control that, and they’re already using screens too much and for too long at school. If their parents aren’t even home during or after their school session, they can’t control that. They will be using phones more frequently at home, and that means a lot more screen time. That’s why I think students should not be allowed to bring their smartphones to school because they’re already using them at home, so why should they use it at school?

The affirmative team countered these points by emphasizing the practical benefits of allowing mobile phones, such as using them during recess for educational purposes or quick communication. Their arguments encouraged the audience to consider the potential advantages of responsibly integrating technology into the classroom in such debates.

Building Strong Partnerships to Empower Students

This debate was part of the ongoing Speechmakers Program, a collaborative effort between Solve Education! Foundation and schools like SMK Jalan Bukit, with generous support from Saujana Cares Foundation. While this particular debate took place at SMK Jalan Bukit, our program has recently visited five schools: KV Ampangan in Negeri Sembilan, SMK Kampung Sertik in Pahang, SMK Seri Permaisuri in Kuala Lumpur, SMK Yaacob Latif in Kuala Lumpur, and SMK Jalan Bukit in Selangor. These partnerships foster strong educational debates and discussions among students.

Together, we aim to create opportunities where students can grow intellectually and emotionally while gaining valuable skills for the future. Through activities like these debates, we provide a safe and encouraging space for students to build confidence, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace innovation.
